Can budgies lay eggs without having a mate?

According to my mom, they do. I'd like to know what other people have to say about this.

Yes, a female bird can lay eggs even if she has never seen a male.

They will be infertile , of course.

But more important is what is can do to your bird. A bird that lays eggs goes through a great deal of stress . If the bird is too young( usually less that 3-4 years old ) this can reduce her life span by as much as fifty percent! Even if she is old enough, it is a terrible strain to the female.

I would recommend doing everything you can to discourage the bird from laying, while making sure that her diet is rich in calcium and nutrients .

Take away any nest box or shelter that might be perceived as one. Move the cage every couple of weeks so that she must get used to new surroundings, to inhibit laying.

Check the Internet to find other methods too.

    Good luck.

Yes they can. The eggs will be infertile, meaning there is no chicks in them. When birds are laying, they tend to do so every second day. Do not remove the eggs until all are laid otherwise they will continue to lay and lay. When your bird starts to ignore the eggs you can take them out and dispose of them. Your bird's diet will need to be richer in calcium and various nutrients when it is in a laying stage. Try to make sure that your bird has no nesting material in it's cage, this sometimes can discourage the laying.
