The Hajj (or Hadj) is one of the pillars of the Islamic faith. Think of it as a reverse-commandment: Thou SHALT do!
The Hadj, or pilgrimage, is a demonstration of faith where muslims travel from one of a number of established meeting sites in Saudi Arabia, to Mecca. The journey of the Hadj involves rites of purification, prayer, sacrifice (enduring hardship), honoring acts of historical significance, rebuking the devil and total submission to the will of God. One of the most important stops on the journey is to the Ka'aba, the house of God, built by Abraham and his son. This is, by no mistake, the focus for the prayers of muslims, as this is the most direct route to God's ear (Muslims in the US pray to the east, as this happens to be the shortest distance to Mecca and the Ka'aba).
