Training my formerly abused dog? Suggestions for trainers in DFW texas area?
Hi, I have had Buddy, a white longhair chihuahua (mix probably, he looks just like a chi but a little bigger, about 8 pounds) for almost a year now, and he is proving very difficult to train in any way. He is still not housetrained (granted, I don't know how to housetrain a dog, and have never had an indoor dog before), and is extremely skittish around people. He was definitely abused and neglected before I got him, although how much I will never know (he is a little less than 2 years old as far as anyone can tell, so it was obviously done when he was a puppy). He absolutely adores me, wagging his tail furiously when I get home, and jumping around, but still not allowing me to pet him very often. He is terrified when I try to catch him, which I need to do periodically to trim his nails, get his collar and leash on him, etc. He is a lot better than he was when I got him, and I think he's to the point now where training would help. Any suggestions for good, CHEAP dog behaviorists in DFW?

An abused dog is very easy to rehabilitate. The resilience of a dog is quite amazing.
The problem dog is not the abused one but is simply the wallflower of a poorly socialized litter of puppies. Any time a litter is not properly socialized it is almost certain that one of the pups will be overly dominant and another overly submissive/timid. This is the pup that will grow up with all the social problems that many confuse with having been abused. often not allowing anyone to touch it, more often than not a fear biter, and the dog under the bed anytime the doorbell rings. People will automatically think some mean MAN beat the crap out of it because it shudders at the sound of a mans voice. Well it is the tone of a mans voice that causes the reaction, and the dog has probably never been touched by a man before.
Rehab for the wallflower will be different for every dog, and I suggest you rethink the "cheap" part of your equation because you want someone that knows what they are doing to be working with your dog.

Hi, I understand that you are looking for some advice or resources to help fully train your dog or fix behavior problems. If a professional dog trainer is not an option at this time, or if you want to trt training your dog on your own (a great way to bond), I'd suggest you https://bitly.im/aMUX3
A friend recommened it to me a few years ago, and I was amazed how quickly it worked, which is why I recommend it to others. The dog training academy also has as an excellent home training course.

Hi, I'm sorry I haven't been out here long enough and don't have any actual experience with this place but my friends used them before for their dog just for general training as a puppy, and I know they were really happy with them. On the site, they have single session problem solving package where you can actually work on one or two behaviors you want to correct. One is extreme submission and you can have as many or as few sessions as you want. Good luck!!

If you use a dog training device it would be common sense to first look up how to use it before using it. Such devices get a bad reputation by people using it, without knowing how to use it.
If you give a dog a shock, the dog doesn't know what to do. If I go up to you and slap you, you wouldn't know why either and except for the likely impulse to slap me back you would have no idea why I slap you and what I expected you to do so I won't slap you again.
Your dog doesn't even know where the slap came from and what he is supposed to do. Before you use an electric collar on a dog you need to figure out the lowest setting the dog can notice. You start at zero and slowly set it higher until you see a reaction from your dog. What you are looking for is a twitch of an ear, or a startled look. Really, you don't want to hurt your dog, you want to get your dog's attention.
Once you established what level works for your dog, you need to condition your dog. If you want to use a collar for improving your dog's recall, your dog needs to already know what it is supposed to do when you call "come" (or whatever command you use). Now with a collar on, you call your dog, you can give your dog a short shock, but if your dog comes you stop immediately. You want that your dog learn he is in control. If he comes, he won't get a shock. Read up on "how to condition a dog to a electric collar" and don't use the collar again until you understood it.
I have an electric collar for my dog, but I paid a little more than $200 for it, it is rechargeable and I am happy with it. I've read through a whole bunch of reviews for the cheaper collars and they seem to not last very long, though you can get lucky. But I figured I rather spend more one time than a little often.
My dog is also very happy with the electric collar, because if I pull the collar out, he knows he is doing something more fun than a walk on a leash and he loves running off leash.
