Why do you think hazing or an initiation is necessary to be accepted in fraternities and sororities?

...the complex process of initiation has changed dramatically over the years. unfortunately, the mind set of the frat boys did not. on paper, hazing isn't supposed to happen anymore but i suppose it's fairly difficult to completely veer away from traditions (primitive as they are)...."kaya yun gulpihan tuloy pa rin" hence, physicals continue to happen.

...yes, there must be an initiation procedure but no, hazing (of the extreme kind) should not be a part of it.

...and to my mind, the only way to combat the problem is for the initiation period to be supervised and that pledges (neophytes) should be sequestered to ensure their safety and well-being.

I think it's great that you got into a sorority. It all seems pointless(hazing, that is) to me because once you're a member of a fraternity or a sorority, then chances are the only thing you should do is just take the oath. However, I'm no authority on this since I'm not in one because I didn't attend a university where I had the opportunity to join one. I went to a 2 year college instead where the only fraternity/sorority that they had was one where you had to have a high grade point average and were an honor student there. I never really saw the point in joining one anyhow, mainly because I'm too cool for one.

Hazing is not necesarry but I think initiation is. Afterall, if everyone can get in at the snap of the fingers, loyalty and commitment cannot be guaranteed.

I am not into hazing but keeping an open mind, i know that hazing is done to embed absolute allegiance to the brotherhood. As i have said before, it is unfortunate but most of us put more value on things we got through buckets of blood, sweat and tears.

It's a primitive, tribal thing which has no place in an advanced society. Just like circumcision, tattooing, female genital mutilation, animal sacrifices and the brutal initiation rites that gangs have. Sod religions, fraternities, tribalism, nationalism, patriotism and frats. We should be a bit more civilised than this crap by now.

Hazings are used to separate the weak from the strong. To test the spirit and morale. It's also about keeping with tradition. I don't agree with them.

Fraternities and sororities tend to be dumb, for the most part. Anything that promotes an attitude of superiority to others is dumb.

Hazing is irrelevant and inhuman. It can cause severe injuries or even death. Sorry but I don't think it's necessary and deaths through hazing is no joke. <*-*>

i think it is not necessary.

if the organization is really keen on accepting you in their brotherhood or sisterhood, why inflict pain on you first?

true brotherhood means accepting the newbie for who or what he is. it does not need requirements, how much more requirements that will endanger the life or dehumanize the newbie and damage his self-esteem...
