How can I easily create/manage/maintain a software database that stores the names, versions, keys of our s/w?

I work in an IT building and we support over 500 various applications.

I have been tasked with creating a database that displays how many pieces of software we own, who makes it, what version it is, how many available licenses/keys were ordered/in use.

Anybody have any ideas that come to mind? I want to make this database as accurate as possible, yet very simple to manage and maintain... I appreciate any suggestions/comments.. Thank you

Well, I spent almost 7 min searching for the best one and this seems to be exactly what u need :)

But if you feel like researching a bit longer, just follow up the first 100 links on the results below..

And if you want an online solution, go for any better open source wiki.

  • Since this is probably going to be a single user application, meaning not network shared and used concurrently by many users, your best best to to use Microsoft Access to develop a simple database application.

You could use Excel or Google Spreadsheet (http://www.google.com/a/) and password protect the file.
