Does anyone have any tips on coping with adult ADHD?

I've been diagnosed today and feel very relieved that i'm not a mental nutbar! I'm looking for tips on coping and especially coping without prescribed medication. thanks! xx

Update:

I don't want medication because I feel it would have an impact on my personality. I still want to be the extroverted hyperactive girl I always was, but work and life seem to get in the way of my natural floatyness!!

    Hiya,

I don't have adult ADHD that I'm aware of, but my partner does and I work with teenagers with the condition so I do have an interest in it.

A website I've found particularly useful is:

    http://add.about.com/

and Netdoctor has a good section too:

    http://premium.netdoktor.com/uk/adhd/index.jsp

Hopefully those links will work for you! There's loads of stuff on both helping you deal with the condition in every part of your life it can effect, from work to relationships.

He has used medication in the past and found it to be of use when he was studying, but hasn't used it for ages.

We find that writing stuff down that he needs to do and leaving the lists in an obvious place is really helpful so that might be something to try if your attention span and memory are as pants as his! If he is feeling antsy I tend to just let him get on with it and give him some space - he lets me know if he needs it, so talk to people. I don't know what you are like regarding holding jobs down, but he has found that very difficult since he finished Uni last year. He knows exactly what he wants to do and finds it really hard to motivate himself in jobs he's not really passionate about. As we all need to work I suggest you think about what really drives you and look for jobs in that area so you can really see the best of yourself. Eat well - lots of fresh fruit and veg, avoid the additives, but I'm sure you already know that.

Oh, and there's nothing wrong with being a mental nutbar! My chap's completely barking and most of the time we have a right laugh, some of the things he does are hysterical!

You'll be fine - Good Luck to you!

    huh??

    what were we talking about?

(sorry, I coulnt help myself, a little humor never hurts though)

When our youngest was being tested for ADD in school, every question on the questionairre thing I kept saying, hey, that is sooo me.

I dont have much of the hyperactivity part although I cant sit still through any TV show longer than 30 minutes and most movies are out of the question.

I have found that just knowing made such a huge difference, I am not organized and never will be, but most of the tips tht the special ed teachers gave our son seem to work with me.

The advice about lists helps, I have lists all the time now LOL, even on the palm of my hand.

If you google it, you will find soo many things from drug companies, it is totally disgusting, ADD/ADHD is nothing but big busniess to them

You are very very wise to shun the drugs except as the total last resort.

One of our son's special ed teachers told us, "I could lose my job for saying this but you son does NOT need medication, we can work through this".

I know this isnt much help, but just knowing I was not alone made a huge difference to me.

    Good Luck!!
