A Blind Woman Needed Help...... Why wouldn't anyone help her?

An older blind woman was calling out for help on the subway, saying that this was her stop, and she needed someone to help her get up to the streets. I watched as people moved out of her way as she felt around for someone to help. I was sickened that everyone tried to avoid her touch! When she came to me with hands stretched out, I took them in my own hands and led her to where she needed to go. HOW COULD SO MANY PEOPLE BE SO CRUEL & HURTFUL?

I couldn't believe what I had witnessed. I know that many people let their ego or pride stop them from humbling themselves to help the needy, but don't they realize that one day they are the ones that may need that help?

Update:

Danagasta : Natives are beautiful people! I was 'called' to follow the Red path just a few years ago, but I wish it had been a part of my life from birth! I truly, deeply believe that the earth misses the old ways....

But to answer you're question, I'm in Toronto, Canada.

This sounds depressing but, sometimes people disguise themselves as something helpless (old woman, blind etc.) with the means of robbing/hurting/attacking.

It's sad and pathetic to think of such an idea in a modern society but that's how it is.

Today is a sad day ... people are more concerned with themselves than anyone else. There use to be a time where more people were helpful. What happened to those days?

I don't think people mind their own business and ignore those who need help because they think they are above anyone. Today, problems aren't solved with an apology. Things are solved with lawyers in courts. This is why people keep to themselves. It's become too easy to sue someone for the stupidest reasons.

(This doesn't fit this example but ... if you spill your coffee on your lap while driving, you sue McDonalds! Come on, you have got to be serious! I am suprised lawsuits like that ever make it to court.)

They must all been late or getting late to take time to help someone in need. Some may have suspicions, too coz sometimes such modus operandi are used in crimes. Others might've seen that that woman could be capable by herself since she made it down to the subway by herself although she might have had help in getting there. And if you helped her and she fell down, you're gonna pay for it. And of course, there are those who don't realize that one day they are the ones that may need that help because perhaps they're just pre-occupied too much with other realizations.

Yes I realize that too. People can be so cruel these days. This world is so ****** up. It sickens me too, watching an elderly asking for help and noone helps. From what I know, most people these days are careless. They only care for themselves and care for thier needs and not others. They just don't understand that people like that woman needs help. But you're right, they will end up asking for help someday, and hopefully they know what it feels like. =)

I am sure that callousness is the reason for their behavior, but some of them may have been embarrassed by disability and not helped for fear of looking out-of-place. I have noticed people look away from or avoid looking at people with disabilities, and I think this may be the reason for some people's attitude. Still unjustified, though.

That is a shame. I'm glad you helped her. It can make someone aware of what to do next time.

I don't know what city you're in, but in NYC, I could be guilty of tuning out strident voices. I got into the habit of ignoring shouting people or people trying to get my attention; I'm sure I let my sense of self-preservation get in the way of helping someone a time or two.

It's called the "someone else will help" idea. We all hope the next person over will take the initiative. That someone turned out to be you. Don't take it hard, just keep doing what is right. Never know, you might inspire someone else to do the same.

I think you know the answer and you just want to gauge the people on yahoo to see their reactions.

Anyways the reason is that it would be 'inconvenient' to help her out. Folks would have to take time out of their own schedule to help a total stranger. They haven't been taught to help one another. Sad but true.

I don't think it's so much as people bieng rude as it is group mentality. Everyone thinks that someone else is going to do it, and then no one steps forward. Yes i'm sure you have some rude people who are just too arrogant to bother helping someone else.

Good for you for helping her! I'm sure it meant a lot to her, and it probably made you feel good.

Some people are freaked out by people with disabilities. Sad to say, but true nonetheless.
