Technically there is no "Six Star General" What your refering to is the term Gerneral of the Armies which is seperate from the term General of the Army. But it was never offically decided that "Armies" is equal to six stars. There is debate however because Pershing (one of the 2) was declared general of the Armies in WW1 but in WW2 Eisenhower was name General of the Army but Pershing was given senoirity. So is it because he held the position longer or because it was a more important position. So its up to you to decide on what you think about that. I say they are equal but thats my opinion. in other words the term never had an official insignia. Six Stars was proposed but nothing was done about it. And the other "six star" is Washington who got it after he died.

The highest rank of General is a 5 star general. This means General of the Army, General of the Air Force, and Fleet Admiral (Navy, equivalent to a General). There is no 5 star USMC rank.

General of the Army has been awarded 5 times to the following:

    • George C. Marshall 16 December 1944

    • Douglas MacArthur 18 December 1944

    • Dwight D. Eisenhower 20 December 1944

    • Henry H. Arnold 21 December 1944

    • Omar Bradley 20 September 1950

General of the Air Force has been awarded once to Henry H. Arnold.

Fleet Admiral has been awarded 4 times to the following:

    • William Daniel Leahy 15 December 1944,

    • Ernest Joseph King 17 December 1944,

    • Chester William Nimitz 19 December 1944,

    • William Frederick Halsey, Jr. 11 December 1945.

Never has been a six-highest was a five star; Eisenhower and Mac Aurthur are the two most famous ones but not sure if they were the only two..

I didn't know that. I thought 5 stars was as high as one could go.

Who were the 6 star generals?
