on a '78 5.3 jaguar xjs is it possible to swap the gm400gbox for a ZF 4 speed autobox from an '88 3.6 xjs

    As far as I'm aware, the reason Jaguar chose the GM400 box for the V12 XJS is because it was one of the few boxes which could handle the torque of the V12, so whether or not it physically could be made to fit or not, it's probably not a good idea. Bear in mind that a BMW straight six can often shred the clutches of a ZF box in under 100,000 miles!
