I'm getting issues playing *.avi files on my computer - no video, but audio's fine. Need help, ASAP?

They're divx, xvid, and plain avi format. I sometimes get the video and audio both, but usually it gives out a black screen with audio only. I'm trying to play my videocam dvd-rips on my computer. I've tried the Divx Player, Windows Media Player, and VLC Media Player (last one's open-source). I'm using windows XP Sp2. If you need any more info, ask.

Update:

First of all, people, do us all a favor and read the description (YES, IDIOT! I HAVE TRIED VLC!)(AND REALPLAYER). Secondly, seriously, if an IT professional reads the description I've put and puts up an answer about codecs, I really shouldn't expect too much from this community. Please, don't act stupid - I'm not your average american idiot.

Update 2:

I found an answer to my question. I did what that google it guy told me, got through to googling a file called "ffdshow" (google ffdshow, check the results) it's supposed to fix my problem. I'm thinking it'll fix it because it got a lot of positive feedback from people with the same problem as me. Case Closed. And everybody except for that google it guy, you guys are plain jerks trying to get your stats up on yahoo answers.

Update 3:

Wanna hear something stupid? I opened the video file with both Divx player and VLC Media player, then I closed the first one I opened. The video always works (in the second one I opened) like a charm.

    Hi,

Go to google.com and do a search using the following keywords...

    troubleshoot video

    http://www.google.com/search?num=100&hl=en&safe=of...

If you want help for .avi files... go to google and search using the following keywords...

    troubleshoot avi video

    http://www.google.com/search?num=100&hl=en&safe=of...

Just google the keywords troubleshoot video and the video format that's causing yout trouble.

Also consider reviewing the video file format preferences within your various software packages.

Have you rebooted? (Funny how a simple reboot fixes a lot of problems)

    Good luck

This is because your computer doesn't have the proper CODEC required to playback the video file you are refering to. You will get sound but no video.

You didn't specify where you obtained the .avi file. Most likely the creator of this file created it with a unique CODEC.

Since I don't know which codec you need, I would suggest doing a google search on a "Windwos XP Codec Pack". You will find several sites to download a file that includes many codecs. BEWARE - before you attempt to install it, scan it thouroughly for viruses!!!!!

  • Try this media player. There's no volume control but it's great otherwise, has lots of codec support and it never lets the audio get off track from the video. In fact it even plays incomplete files.
