One can say that the war started at different times, for different countries.

It had annexed Austria in March 1938 and effectively Czechoslovakia, but these were not deemed acts of war by France and Britain. To Czechoslovakia, World War Two started in March of 1939, when Nazi Germany attacked them. To the Ethiopians, World War Two started in 1936, when Italy attacked. To the Chinese, it dates back to 1931, when Japan occupied Manchuria. The Russians date the start start June 1941 (not 1939).

As for the notion that WW1 and WW2 were one war with a 20-year truce, this is usually not meant in a literal sense.

Since the end od WW2 countries no longer seem inclined to declare official states of war but at the time this was common practice. Although the hostilities leading up to the war certainly started before then WW2 is generally considered to have begun on Sept1 1939 when Germany Invaded Poland from the west and, a few days alter, the Soviets invaded Poland ( and Latvia , Lithuania, and Estonia) from the east. WW2 ended on Aug. 15, 1945 when Japan signed Surrender papers. Germany had already signed Surrender terms in April of 1945.

wikipedia places the date as Jan 15, 1939 because under "Versailles Treaty" it quotes Marshall Ferdinand Foch of France as saying on Nov 11, 1918 "this is not peace but a 20 year armistice." Then Wikipedia applauding Foch s prophetic statement asserts the ww2 began 20 years and 65 days later which would be Jan 15, 1939. I agree w/Foch s 20 year prediction but where did the 65 days come from? Suffice it to say Foch in 1918 was right in that Hitler annexed Czechoslovakia and Austria in 1938.
