Where do I look to help sponsor a child..?

I want to help sponsor a child in another country but refuse to pay any charity organization. I have witnessed and have heard that these organization can be really shady. I want to be able to send clothes, toothpaste, personal care items over to these kids but not money.

Does anyone know where I should look?

In my community I do just this by helping kids in shelters but I would like to help others in other countries.

I agree with your decision. I actually traveled to Honduras and met some great families. I have a trusted person down there to whom I send boxes full of clothes and school items and she disperses them to the children. I hope you are able to find a way to sponsor a child it really means alot.

It is so great that you are helping kids in your community. But the only way to ENSURE that the items you are sending are actually going to the kids would be if you went there yourself.

Oprah has a school and fund for african children.

But I would hope that you would consider reaching out within our own country first. Beyond your own community and across the entire country.

Also, if you are a member of a chruch, I would ask about the missions that the church supports. I know that my church has missions across the world bringing food, water, and clothes to the children.

more then 486,000 children and youths were in out-of-home care (family foster care, group, and residential) in the United States.

(As a single mother who has lived in a shelter, Thank you for the help you are providing!!!!!)

I've sponsored a child through World Vision for many years and would definitely recommend them. I've also seen their projects in the Middle East, and in 3 African countries, and was impressed with what they are doing. You can correspond with your child and even visit him/her if you go to their country.

The benefit to going through an organization is that they are helping the communities to become self-sufficient. Sending goods helps, but is a temporary fix only. You know the adage "Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for life".

A lot of time on National Public Radio they will talk about these things, people coming on because they work in another country and need assistance. Go to npr.com and look up world view and you may find a legit agency there.

I use Children's International. Though it is organized it has a good rep and you will hear from your child (or children).
