Let her go, or send her to death row !!?

I had a problem earlier today, the people at the leasing office where I stay told me I couldn;t keep my dog any longer on the property. Now mind you, I've had this dog a year and just renewed my lease with these thoughtless bastard's , they wait till I renew the lease and tell me a week later that I have a vicisous animal on the property, I did everythang they told me to do when I frist got her.

I bought a cage to keep her in , a very long strudy stake to put in the ground to tie her off, I bought a muzzle for her when she wants to bark at nothing. I clean up waste, hell I even built a gate for the back of our unit. My dog is red terrior , by the way and her name is pebbles. So when my stepdaughter went to school I took her to two shelter's and they were all full, so I tried the animal control center. They informed me that they would only house her for a week, then she would be put to sleep.

So I let her out to use it and she took off with another dog she saw. I let her be !!

Update:

I thought this would be the best thing to do rather than let her be put to sleep, she seened pretty happy. I called her at the top of voice, but she looked back as if she was making a decision to go or stay, she choose to take off with a cocker spaniel. They both are on the run I suppose. My stepduaghter was very sad, but when I told her what she was facing she kinda laughed but deep down I feel awful. I liked the flea bag quite a bit myself. So do you think I did the right thing?????

Update 2:

I didn't have a lota time to do anything action had to be taken asap !! What would yall do.

Update 3:

People i didn't just turn my dog a loose, she jumped out the car and ranto a nearby field where she took up with a cocker spaniel, and they took off under a fence towards a wooded area. I didn't have the time to chase her down, plus I was running late for work. the dog has tags on, I don't think she would harm anyone unless cornered.

If you cannot have her back then I would let it go- chances are someone will find her and either take her into their own home or take her to a nearby shelter. Dogs never usually go to far away, but they are pretty smart- she may have sensed this, known she had to go, and instead of you being the one to have to carry this burden, she saved you from having to decide and made the decision for you.

Obviously she loved you already enough to spare you- this is what dogs do, they are unselfish unlike human beings.

What made them determine you had a "viscious" dog on the property? Does breed specific legislation exist where you are now? Was there an incident?

If all she did was bark at people passing by but she is safely contained and nothing has changed from what the conditions were when you signed the first lease, and she was on that one, they would have had to have an incident they discussed with you causing her not to have been included on the new lease and you signed it. Otherwise, they likely cannot legally force you to get rid of her.

Sadlly, what you did is something that is a negative result of people passing laws that restrict certain breeds or label specific breeds as dangerous just because they bark and a person feel threatened though the animal is well contained.

If your dog did not do anything and your dog was on the original lease, incl. on the renewal, they can't just suddenly say they believe the dog is viscious based on breed unless your local law allows for that.

If there was an incident then you would be responsible for re-homing or taking other measures to ensure the safety of others and the well being of your dog.

Letting her "go" by turning her loose could result in many more problems. Domesticated dogs don't do well when released to fend for themselves. They are subject to all kinds of diseases and injuries and often wind up hit by cars or caught and put in shelters after a life of hell, and then killed.

If your dog comes back, I hope you will take her in and find some place to foster her, but letting her go puts her in great danger not to mention the people that can get hurt if she darts out in traffic. This could all backfire on you, too.

I am sure you meant well, but this is a tragic story. You didn't want to put your dog where you knew it would be killed and you hoped letting her go would at least give her life. If I was told my dogs could no longer be on a lease, I'd move with them. I just can't imagine either taking them to a shelter or letting them loose to fend for themselves knowing what can and does happen to these dogs.

If you signed the lease and everything was just as before they can not legally make you get rid of the dog for a year or when ever the lease is up. Unless......... it is proven that the dog is vicious and there have been complaints or there has been a ban then you would have to. And if there has been a ban that they put on the city codes recently and you have owned your dog before that, You may be able to "grandfather " the dog into the city code as long as there were no complaints of any kind or has not been labeled as vicious.

Under no circumstance should you ever let your dog run loose. That will also count as a complaint.

I think your decision was very inhumane! Pebbles is now out running wild, did you happen to stop and think"what if she gets hit by a car?" She may lay in a ditch with severe wounds in pain and suffering. Now ask yourself if you can live with that? There are tons of rescue homes on the net. I am a animal lover, not to mention I am a property manager of a small apartments complex.Trust me there were other options.I hope Pebbles is getting food and water,I know if you were out on the streets homeless, you could not survive without it.Your decision was bad.

  • So instead of a humane death in the company of someone that she knew and loved and trusted, you let her out into the "wild" where she can be hit by a car or starve to death or be hurt by thoughtless humans or catch a disease?

::banging head on brick wall in frustration::

I echo the thoughts of the person who hopes that she's at least spayed, so she's not bringing more puppies into the world.

If I were you I would 1. gather up all proof that they attempted to change the terms of your contract AFTER the contract was signed then sue the property management company

    2. move.

you had PLENTY of time to put together a lawsuit! and start an action (which at the very least would keep you from getting kicked out until such time as everything got figured out or you have time to move somewhere new)

I'm really sorry you were put in this position. But no, you did not do the right thing. Please do everything you can to find your dog. Then, surrender her to a rescue group so that she will be safe and will eventually have a new family. Rescue groups for every breed are out there and also groups that do not specialize in just one breed. And nearly all of them accept mixed breeds as well. Google dog rescue with the name of your town. Then if you cannot find one, contact me and I will see what I can find. I have contacts in rescue all over the country. I hope your dog is safe. There is so much out there that is dangerous to her.

What's done is done and the dog is gone. Just pray that none of the things mentioned above happen to her. You had to make a major decision with no time to think about it and that happens to all of us once in a while!

Lets hope she is spayed/neutered because if she isn't there will be some puppies that have no home and will probably die of food. You should have put up fliers to look for a new owner.
