Louis L'Amour
According to wikipedia, he won the congressional gold in 1982, but thats just small detail.

my grandpa, who was bit of a boxer in his day too, probably had 20 or 30 of his books. he wrote mostly cowboy stories, but he wasn't a bad poet either. the man you're talking about is louis l'amour.
