The answer is yes. See below:-

The Adam's apple - more clinically known as the laryngeal prominence - is a feature of the human neck. This lump, or protrusion, is formed by the angle of the thyroid cartilage surrounding the larynx.

    Sex differences

The laryngeal prominence is usually more prominent in adult men than in women or prepubescent girls or boys. Note that the growth of the larynx itself during puberty is responsible for the vocal instability in teenage boys, not the laryngeal prominence. The laryngeal prominence is merely the protrusion one sees of the thyroid cartilage making up the body of the larynx. Some suggest that the reason for the laryngeal prominence usually being more prominent in males is that the two laminae of the thyroid cartilage that form the protrusion meet at an angle of 90° in males but that angle is usually 120° in females. This theory, however, seems more like conjecture when the fact is taken into consideration that with most women with a large laryngeal prominence appear no different from those seen on men.

A prominent laryngeal prominence is commonly considered a male secondary sex characteristic though this is more of a perception than anything pointing to scientific fact since not all males have large laryngeal prominence and there are quite a few women who do.

    Do Women Have Adams Apples

  • 1 decade ago

Women generally can't have Adam's apples due to the dominance of their female hormone, estrogen. Although both genders have both hormones, it is the dominance of one that is expressed that gives the secondary characteristics typical of that gender. There are some women with pronounced Adam's apples due to the fact that they have taken steroids or any hormonal supplements to add up muscle. These herculean ladies feel that it's necessary because some of them join competitions that needs defined and muscular physiques. Having Adam's apples are just a consequence apart from the muscular appearance. Girls don't have enough testosterone to achieve a very muscular look, so female bodybuilding enthusiasts inject steroids to gain this and unfortunately, adam's apples.

Everyone has a larynx, it's usually larger in men.

The Adam's Apple is the larynx also known as the voice box.

When the larynx grows larger during puberty, it sticks out at the front of the throat.

Everyone's larynx grows during puberty, but a girl's larynx doesn't grow as much as a boy's does.

That's why boys have Adam's Apples.

Most girls don't have Adam's Apples, but some do.

Why is it called an Adam's Apple?

If you think it's called that after the story of the Garden of Eden where Adam ate a piece of the forbidden fruit that got stuck in his throat, you're right.

Well, here's the deal with women and adam's apples. Men and women both have adam's apples, however in men it's more prominent due to hormones.

When you see a woman with a huge apple, it's because she naturally (or may not, who knows) has higher levels of testosterone. Look at feminine-looking women-- they don't have adam's apples, and therefore probably have higher levels of estrogen.

A lot of women who are personal trainers tend to have higher levels of testosterone, which enables them to be more physically active and muscular than women who have higher levels of estrogen. Unfortunately, this may mean other features look more masculine.
