The name is Michel, French for Michael. He was considered a philosopher, historian, sociologist and other disciplines.

Foucault was tremendously influential in France in the 1960's and 70's, less so in the US. Some of his books are Madness and Civilization and The Archeology of Knowledge. My personal favorite is Discipline and Punish.

He studied the marginalized people in any society, though mainly in France. People that are discarded by society, like the insane, prisoners, prostitutes. He does not question "what's wrong with them?", but rather, why there is a selective process in any society (throughout history) that regards certain people as a threat to order, excluding them in different ways, such as institutions (asylums, prisons), neighborhood areas (prostitutes, immigrants, racial groups).

He questions the definitions of sanity/insanity, criminal/noncriminal, etc. It's not an easy read, unless you're interested in these subjects.
