Can you put electric guitar pickups on an acoustic guitar?
I'd like to mount a humbucker to an old acoustic to see what it sounds like. I haven't been able to find any evidence online of anyone doing this sort of thing, and I know I'm not that original. Any ideas? Is there some obvious reason why I shouldn't do it?

Yes, it can be done. You have to know a little bit about wiring, a little bit about woodworking, and have the realization that it will be a lot of fiddling about til it comes out 'right'.
Here are th pit falls:
1) it will never sound as clean when played unplugged again.
2) The acoustic, not having the same sort of bracing as even a hollow body electric will mean that it is LIKELY to feedback often and uncontrollably.
Other than that - have at it!

Putting a humbucker on an acoustic guitar would require a retro-fit kit to make it fit the hole or cutting into the body. In either case, it's going to affect the sound of the guitar when you're playing unplugged. No idea how it would sound plugged in. I wouldn't do it, but I also have three electric guitars and a Takamine acoustic that came pre-wired.

It wouldn't be any different than any of the soundhole pick-ups that are around. Shadow makes a humbucker, as does Fishman. I'd go that route rather than mount one permanently. The key is the strings - bronze acoustic strings aren't picked up as strong as the E and B strings, so the pick-up has to be adjusted or you have to use electric strings.

They sell pick ups for those that fit inside the sound-hole.
They also sell a piazzo pick up that goes UNDER the saddle.
