Concerned about daughter's gnome infatuation?
My 16 year old daughter has a huge collection of garden gnomes---over 300 of them! I'm concerned her infatuation has come to mean too much to her, she spends all her time in her room or in the garden laughing and playing with the gnomes. I've tried hiding them from her, but she found a few of them and was furious with me. Is this a little wierd, or is it me?

i personally love gnomes, i think you should accept her difference, and only get concerned if she begins carrying them around the house and acting like they are talking to her. Or if she refers to them as people, and blames them for things

Yeah, it must be either a collection hobby she's into, or something's not right with her head.
Now, it's...weird enough..someone would have an army of gnomes of all things(seriously, they are creepy), but talking to and playing with them? As if they're really dwarfs and munchkins in some wacko land?
Well, if she has a normal life, then that might be just a hobby gone too far. Did you ever ask her why she's so into them? If she spends all day just talking to the gnomes, find
counseling...now.
OR, maybe you encourage her by having SO MANY GODDA*NED gnomes around.
Troll or not, I'll bet there's someone out there obsessed with gnomes. People usually just take golf clubs or bats to them, because they're supposedly 'evil' in some way. Their beady little eyes, porcelain bodies, crazed laughing expression.... People obsessed with gnomes grow old to be the talk and fear of the neighborhood kids because they think she can make the gnomes come alive and no one that goes into her house or yard ever comes out again...

Since your daughter is already seeing a therapist, I would definitely let them know of the change in her behavior ASAP. It's unfortunate to hear of a teen suffering from depression, it's such a horrible thing to go through and I hope that they can get this taken care of and help her. One thing I will say though, it is a possibility something has triggered it to make it worse. I agree talking to her may be the best course of action followed by a good day out (works both as secondary gain and a distraction if it is triggered). I may catch heat for this, but my experience with depression is that lack of sunlight can actually contribute to it and maybe a good day out in the daytime, sunlight, may give her a good boost? Especially if she is going to sleep immediately after school... I truly hope they can help you EDIT: Just a word of warning on the St. John's Wort. If your daughter is currently taking medication for depression you need to make sure you contact your pharmacist to make sure it is safe. It's not just St. John's Wort, any form of herbal supplement should be run by your pharmacist prior to taking it. If you do elect to take the St. John's wort, make sure you get one that contains .5% hypericin and comes from the actual root. Less expensive brands aren't usually good quality.

It is not odd when I was 16 I had a collection of troll dolls, she is an individual and not concerned with what society thinks is normal for a 16 year old be proud that you raised a child that is comfortable in their own skin.

Well I really doubt she is "laughing and playing" with the gnomes, you may just be over reacting to someone who enjoys collecting an odd object. To each there own, atleast she isn't collecting boyfriends.

If she spends no time with friends doing "normal" teenage things, you might have reason to be concerned. See if the infatuation passes. If not, therapy might be something to consider.

I think you should get profesional help ...immediately. A normal 16 year old girl would be collecting thongs, shoes or something other than gnomes. And surely would spend her time partying , talking on the phone , listening to music. Something is wrong , your daughter has probably experianced something to make her act like this.

um yea gotta say its a little "odd"... but maybe its something she is just going through...has her attitude changed??What kind of friends does she hang out with??
Wouldnt you rather her be a little "out there" than to be having sex and drinking and smoking..??
Id let it go unless her personality itself is a little on the devil, witchcraft side...

uhh yeah that is weird. really weird. if she was 'laughing and playing' with them she has a problem. maybe you should try and enroll her in extra curricular activites or send her to therapy.

I don't think it's weird its unique and she will move on to smothing else soon.
