Your vet is right you are not supposed to wash rabbits. I bet I know where that smell is coming from!

Have you ever cleaned his scent glands? They get really dirty and gunk builds up in them, therefore they become smelly.

The scent glands are located on either side of the genitals and you will see a dark waxy substance. You can clean it out by using a Q-tip and baby oil.

I hope this helped! If you have ANY more questions you can email me.

If your rabbit doesn't have urine on its hind end, just smell, there is a spray you can get (Petsmarts). It says you don't need to wash it off, but you can use a wet rag (that way it isn't on there full strength and there's less chance of skin irritation). My rabbit was incontinent, and as I usually took her to the vets for washings, there's an idea, too. But I have used this spray and it works okay. Otherwise, to give your rabbit a bath, you need at least two people, and soap-free shampoo from your vets. Have someone carefully hold down the rabbit in shallow water (one hand around the upper back, and the other firmly restraining the hind legs and lower back). Instead of running water for rinsing have a large prefilled bowl in the tub and lift the rabbit into that, using a filled pitcher to rinse. Running water may scare him/her worse.

Rabbits are typically meant to be in the wild. If you do any kind of washing, you should use just water.

A wild animal isn't meant to be soaped up. Chemicals, you know.

Doing that might give it a rash that will never go away.

My rabbit has medium length hair and i often need to trim around his rear when he is molting as his poo gets caught up and the oils also begin to mat the fur as well.

If your rabbit has not been fixed this may be another reason for smelling.

Rabbits often die from chills in the wild so i suggest you do not wash him.

    Good luck.
