Above are all great suggestions. One thing that I do is call the local newspapers before hand. They may be willing and able to get you a press pass. This would allow you to get closer to the action. If you don't already, try taking photos at a local high school football game or some other event.

Attend and start photographing the events with professional business cards in hand!. When you get an exceptional shot, offer it to a local newspaper or magazine.
Offer photos to the team coaches for use in programs, making sure you get credits mentioned when published.
Submit your best work to competitions and contests.
Take all the clinics and classes you can to get the best education. Consider all criticism.Invest in a great camera.

first you have to be a photographer as a profession. second a sports magazine or company pays you. If you want to be one you have to have enough of your work to present to agencies that specialize in sports. Most photographers specialize in one area. Call a sports magazine or two and ask where they get there photos

first be trained and know the craft, second get a sports lens - canon 600mm or 800mm, 3 get a portfolio, fourth send out your portfolio
