What type do you prefer the English type Lab or the American type Lab?

After three days of arguments with my two best friends, one who breeds the English style and the other who breeds the American style Labs. I was wondering what other prefer and if you think besides appearance is there any other difference. I have the English type and prefer them but that is a look thing. My boyfriend has the American type and both dogs have the loving Lab attitude. I just wanted to know what others thought.

Update:

lotzahunters I know the breed standard I have showed Labs, there are 2 different styles or types The Englsih are in the confirmation classes DUH.

Witters, man I sorry about your dog there are bad dogs in every breed and ironically I got into Labs because of vicious unprovoked attacks on my mother by Akitas, a dog is only as good as their owner.

I prefer the English type, but that's only because that is a better fit for my lifestyle. I don't use my dog to hunt, so I don't need an American style lab. I have found that my English type lab has tons of energy anyway, so I can only imagine what an American type is like! My breeder breeds both types and told me (with a sort of wistful look in his eye) that American labs will "go through a wall for you." Which is awesome if you're hunting, but not so if you don't!

He called English type labs "the rugs." Which is pretty funny to me now because my labby girl is not what I would call a rug. She's well-behaved and good at home, and sleeps a fair amount, but that's only because I take her hiking most days where she gallops (and sounds like a horse) through woods and creeks and lakes.

Even though my lab is from two conformation champions, her father is also a master hunter, so that may account for her energy level!

IMO, some American labs are not as good-looking as the English type. They are bred primarily for hunting ability, and not looks, and sometimes it shows. I'd like to see more American labs look more like English labs.

My dog's breeder told me that sometimes American lab puppies are harder to place in homes because they can get into an awkward-looking stage much earlier than an English lab. The breeder started out only selling American labs for hunters, and now that they breed both, he said they sell 10 times more English labs.

Anyway, I think they're both great. It just depends on your activity level, and which dog would fit in with your lifestyle better,

I have only had experience with one English Lab. It was in a training class. I like the look of the English lab. The dog also seemed a little more calm and settled than his American lab counterparts in class. The dogs were all about the same age, so he wasn't older.

I like the size of the English and the look. Seemed to have a great temperament. Smart and easily trained. I'd probably try an English if I were in the market for a lab.

Both types of Labs are wonderful. It's a personal preference as far as I am concerned. My son's lab is an American bred lab and he's the greatest! However, my neighbor has 2 beautiful English bred black labs and they are both really wonderful dogs as well. Same great lab temperament. Of course, in our family because we love Hercules so much, we tend to think HE is the best lab ever. In fact, we call him "Hercules, the world's best dog" :-)

I don't dislike any dog but have had a lot of bad experiences with Golden Retrievers, so I am not keen on them, but I know there are plenty of lovely ones about. I don't like ones that have been bred to extremes - it's not the actual dog I don't like but what humans have done to them. They include Bulldog, Pug, Basset Hound, Sharpei, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Pekingese... My favourites (as I "have" to choose :-P) are Staffordshire Bull Terriers, Whippets, American Bulldogs, Standard Poodles, Rottweilers, Springer Spaniels, Beagles, Border Collies, Trailhounds and, perhaps best of all, mixed-up breeds! I live in the UK where pit bulls have been banned since I was very young... So I looked them up on the Internet and I cannot believe how beautiful they are. I fully believe people who say they are generally great with children. Staffies get a bad press here but their breed standard is to be good with children. You just get horrible uncaring people breeding any and every Staffie they can get their grubby hands on. I've just remembered - the Petit Griffon Basset Bruxelles (or whatever it's called) is the scariest dog I've ever seen!

Funny how you said loving lab attitude. I own an Akita and we were walking in the park couple of days ago. My dog was on lead the lab was not.

The loving lab attitude came to the for when the lab tried to wrap his teeth around my dogs neck. Very loving!

Ofcourse the stupid dog made a mistake attacking my dog but I have found that labradors are just as likely to attack than any other dog. The lab was aggressive and dangerous, It was lucky that my dog is able to defend such an unprovoked attack. Your wrong about labradors. They are not all loving

I prefer field-bred Labs...not even American conformation Labs. To me, most still look clunky.

To me a dog should look athletic. A dog bred for field and water work should be athletic.

    My opinion.
