I am pretty sure the only way to delete your songs is if you activate sync if you don't do that it shouldn't erase your songs.

it usually ask something like this before it deletes them all.
this ipod is used by another copy of itunes, would you like to format it to work with this copy of itunes ?
if you tell it yes, then it deletes it all first.
the other way to get it to work is to sign in to itunes with the same user name and password you set when you first installed it.

I'm pretty sure that won't happen. itunes will want to load your ipod songs immediately.. not delete them.
