First off it would help to know what you are specifically shooting. Which Camera an SLR or a digital and the lens that you are currently using. The Northern Coast is beautiful.
Napa Valley is another good vantage point to shoot from early in the morning when the fog is still present. It will add depth and help define the object that you are shooting.
