can you breed 2 different breeds of birds. budgie and canary in particular?
I have a budgie and his mate died and he started feeding the canary through the cage so i put them together and they are really happy. The male budgie tries to put his leg up on the female canary but I have never seen him actually doing it.

NO!!!They may become buddies but nothing will ever come of it. It is genetically impossible and just won't happen. They might engage in mating like behaviors and groom each other but any eggs layed will be infertile....they can lay eggs without a male even!It isn't going to hurt anyone so let them be buddies...just don't expect babies from the pairing.

The definition of species at school was something about individuals of that species being able to breed together and have offspring that can then breed themselves. Budgies and canaries are each a different species. Maybe that does not mean that if they get on well without the canary being hurt, they can't be companions. The budgie might be trying to get the canary's attention - I have seen budgies do that to one another when they were not a pair. I guess you would see other accompanying behaviour from the budgie that would indicate amorous intentions though. If you think the budgie could hurt the canary, maybe it is time to get a replacement mate though. Good luck

All three birds are capable of singing, but a canary doesn't have the ability to speak or liked to be handle. If a budgie: Budgies are great for first time pet bird owners, since they are relatively inexpensive and are small and manageable. They CAN be very affectionate once they are tame (and nearly all budgies are tameable). They are RELATIVELY quiet, but they still make some noises, especially ones that are well-bonded to humans. There is especially that noise that sounds like "ack-ack-ACK" which can be quite noisy. However, the noise can be lower by giving it a "time out" (cover cage for a few minutes, but only if the budgie is bad), or just give a reply to the budgie's call. But keep in mind that these noises would happen, so don't be too upset when it happens. Budgies might also take awhile to learn how to talk, and not all budgies are capable of talking. Most budgie though can whistle a tune (but don't teach this first, since whistling is more enjoyable and manageable). Also, it is more likeable that a male parakeet will speak. If a cockatiel: Although I don't own a cockatiel, like yourself, I was trying to choose a pet for myself (so I did research like every future pet owner should do). Cockatiels are also excellent first time pet bird owners since they can be very affectionate (like their Cockatoo relatives) and are relatively smaller (but bigger than a budgie). Cockatiels are excellent whistlers and can be noisy, but if properly trained, the noise levels can be alleviated. The males may be able to speak, but not all birds has this attribute. (Since you took care of cockatiel, I won't go into too much detail). I would suggests to get a hand-raised budgie that is affectionate, since cockatiel do cost more and produces more mess (by more mess, I mean they produce dander). My budgie, which I got from a pet store about a couple months ago, is still timid; thus, if your wife loves the cockatiel for their affectionate nature, get a very loving budgie.

Its impossible. They are not closely enough genetically related for it to ever happen. The most you can expect is that the parakeet will end up killing the canary because of the more aggressive nature of the parakeet and, HELLOOOO, take a look at the difference in their beaks - who could inflict more damage on who?
Separate them NOW and consider purchasing another budgie and another canary if you feel they each need a mate.

What is really wrong with people today? Why would you even put them together? Your parakeet could kill the canary if it won't allow it to breed, you are asking for disasterous results by doing this!!!
Will you learn when you don't have the canary left, or perhaps you will be posting "what happened to the canary" later on?
Are you looking for a way to NOT clean two cages, or you just looking for a reason to be lazy?
These are two different species and should not be housed together!!!

They really shouldn't be kept together and NO, they cannot produce offspring. That's like a dog and a cat mating- it shouldn't happen and won't produce offspring. Just as a cat and a dog can be buddies, a canary and a parakeet can be buddies, but that's it.

What a question to ask. Do the birds look alike? No they cannot mate. One is a hook bill and the other isn't. Just friends they will be.
