Question about car brakes?
Left my car sitting for about a month and a half - got in to drive it and the brakes aren't working right. First seemed locked up and then didn't really seem to be working right. Made strange noises too. What could have happened while it was sitting and what do I do?

Drive the car slowly and gently apply the brakes. If you can drive slowly and keep the pedal pressed for a few moments at the same time do so. It is normal for the brakes to have a build up of condensation and dust etc., if the brakes are not used for some time. I can assure you that after repeating the above exercise for a few times your brakes will be in perfect condition as they were before. Do not spend money at this stage but do use the above method.

They do this sometimes because of rust in the cylinders that actually move the working part of the brakes, shoes or pads.
When they get stuck like that, they need to come apart and be cleaned/honed. This happens because a certain amount of moisture gets into the brake fluid system. The cheap way out, find a shop that can fix the rust problem. Most brake shops want to get way into your wallet or purse, so be advised.

Lack of braking is usually due to the rust build up on the rotors and sometimes condensation build up in the fluid. inspect brakes for wet spot to detemine if you have a leak. If the seem to feel like the are locked up , do a feel check the rotor will be hot if it is grabbing and also the car will be pulling. give it a few days if it don`t seem to get better take it to a shop.

Sounds like your brake rotors/drums probably got surface rusted. Drive it for a few days. If it still is a problem, you will need to get the rotors/drums resurfaced/cleaned up.

It could be a few different things. You could have a caliper that locked up. you could also have a leak in your brake system and there is air in the lines. do they not work at all or did you have to pump them a little to get them to work?
