What was the most influential pop/rock act of the 1980s and why?

I would have to say the Pixies. They were the originators of the alternative rock scene

Whether or not people like him, Michael Jackson definitely was the most influential act of the 80's. Just think about it. His album Thriller sold 100 million albums worldwide. With only that one album, he's managed to outsell so many popular bands. His other albums have sold as well as Beatles albums I believe, and he has received much critical acclaim. Michael Jackson's music has influenced so many pop stars, and it's amazing how famous he really is.

My personal favorite of the 80's is Prince. Maybe Iron Maiden. Or Metallica.

Because the 80s where a time of rebellion a time to rise up out of the ashes make a point or get out of the way and these bands

where the leaders for a vast majority of the word some people said they brainwashed you others said they were the light in the dark rockers had real attitude then it was about making a statement be honest today its like a fashion statement.

Its kind of sad if your old enough to remember.

Almost everyone mentioned (except Jackson) grew up on Ziggy era or the Eno Low/Lodger/Heroes stuff (AKA Bowie meets Roxy Music)...which are the roots of new wave.

As far as the whole Velvet Underground being most influential. Bowie factors in.. who produced Lou Reed's Transformer and covered VU "White Light White Heat"? Mick Ronson also played on Lou's early solo stuff.

I would either go with Prince or Madonna. Both had incredible musical runs. Both elicited an ocean of controversy.Both were talented enough to extend their careers. Both had multi media experiences and improved.

A difficult one to answer as different acts influenced different people but to name a few:

Paul Weller/Jam/Style Council - Influenced Britpop and modern day guitar bands

The Stone Roses - As above. Many fans were inspired to form bands.

Prince - Influenced rock, pop, r&b, hip-hop, dance

Smiths/Morrissey - Indie/Britpop

Madonna - Spice Girls, Kylie & many more "Girl Groups"

Guns N' Roses were probably the most influential "metal" band, but I'm not sure on the rock n' pop stuff.

got to b blondie , while all other groups were say 17...20 she started at the age of 32, and if you listen to a lot of her early stuff she started the rap , and a few of todays female artists have copied her style of looks dress and hair

Michael Jackson, he changed pop completly, as well as dancing...he broke a lot of boundaries.

I'd have to go with Journey.

They ruled the 80's as far as music goes
