I think that you answered your own question when you said that your ex-boyfriend gave you the plant and the "gardener" told you that the chopping to the core was necessary. You neee t let go.... in order to move on you will have to go back to the bare roots and then move forward.... sounds as though right now you are holding on to past and trying to make it co-exist with the present...sometimes this is not the best way.
