Your description does not make it clear whether the huge vein is over the knee itself or from knee level upward. In either case, it appears that you have a varicose vein that is inflamed (phlebitis), without clot within (phlebothrombosis). Motrin and similar anti-inflammatory, analgesic pharmaceuticals offer limited relief. Compression stockings, limb elevation are useful, but impose physical and social inconveniences for a comfortable life style.
From your mentioning factor V and lupus, I suspect your physician is a hematologist. Perhaps he is, in fact, a vascular specialist. Certainly, a vascular consulation at this time is warranted anyway. In my opinion, barring any genuine or potential contraindications, surgical excision of the vein would be advisable, especially since other measures have been ineffective. In general, removal of such a varicose vein could be done without general anesthesia.
Good luck, and get well!
