Nope. Something I keep handy is a flash camera [really the flash attachment will do]. Even if you're in an apt. you can put it up to the spy window, but in a home just go to a window that has a view of the door and flash away. People who are up to no good don't care to think their picture is being taken.

Don't answer it unless you know and trust who it is. Try to get a peek at them through a window or peep hole. Unless you were making noise, the police shouldn't be knocking.

You can always just wait for your husband to come home to secure the area outside.

That question reminds me of all the slasher movies where they are just gonna "check the closets" before they get out of the house.
