The episode in which Merideth gets sick and Mark becomes a staff member is named "What I Am" and is in Season 3. Technically the race for the chief's position didn't begin until later in the "Great Expectations" episode (also Season 3). In that episode, Mark was contemplating leaving Seattle, but decided to stay once the chief's position became a possibility.
