Is it true a meteorite is coming towards earth? How can we stop it?

I've heard that in 2029 a meteorite will come close to earth...will they find a solution? what would it be? because in 2036 it is going to hit.

I may be only 15 years old and still in high school but personally i LOVE space so i do get a lot of stuff like this at school too so here's what i tell them. Yes there is an "Asteroid" coming towards earth. we get hit with meteorites constantly everyday..lol. but scientist have 5 basic ways of riding it: 1. to knock the object of course by launching a nice solid object/missile at it only budging it by a few feet but enough to make it swing around our gravitational pull and away. 2. to launch a small craft with strong rocket-like thrusters on it to push it away, 3. to blow it to smaller pieces with a missile. I'm not sure if this helps you but i hope it does. by the way this is my first post also.

It is true that 270 meter wide (99942) Apophis will make a close pass of the Earth on Friday April 13, 2029, coming within about 38,000 km (one tenth the distance to the Moon.) It will not strike the Earth on this occasion, though at the time of its initial detection in 2004 our knowledge of its orbit was poor enough that at one stage there appeared to be a 2.5% chance of collision. The 2029 pass will alter Apophis' orbit and the subsequent trajectory depends strongly on the exact path followed in 2029. Thus we cannot at present rule out an impact in 2036 (or 2037) but the likelihood of impact is low, around 1 in 45,000 for a 2036 impact and much lower for 2037. Our next opportunity for data will be in late 2012 and early 2013. At this time we may then be able to rule out impacts in 2036 and 2037.

Ya we are going to face a the greatest battle ever faced in the histroy of the mankind.

The meteorite which is heading towards is expected to hit us around 2036 is named as "smithtutle".

It is capable of making most of the life disappear scientists say that even half of the mamals would even become extinct.

But a lot steps are being made to tackle it ESA(European Space Agency) has planned to conduct a test on a meteorite called "Aphosis" which will pass earth and moon by the end of 2010.They are going to make ot deviate from it original trajectory.

Some thrust devices are also being developed by scientists, with these devices they will first launch the devices to the meteorite and fix it to the meteorite and the device would make it deviate from the path.

Other ideas are also being made out to protect our mother Earth from danger but nothing could be said 100%.

No one can predict the nature of the result of these tests.

Lets hope that every thing ends well.

No. Meteorites are objects which have already landed on Earth. There is an asteroid, Apophis, which was initially predicted to come close to Earth in 2029 and 2036, but as the orbit was refined, it became clear that it would miss on both occasions.

Meteorites are always hitting the earth. Part of the downside of being in the galaxy.

No big or dangerous ones have been spotted as yet, so you're reading an urban legend.

I believe they're currently experimenting with mirrors mounted on satellites and methods of deflection.
