In my opinion, he will probably become a teacher. To be more specific an elementary or middle-school teacher. He obviously loves children and would want to influence them to do right things, shown many times in the book (one example is the bad word on the wall in the school which he tries to erase.)

I always sort of thought Holden would work with young kids, kids about Phoebe's age when he watched her on the merry-go-round... a teacher taking kids through the museum or to the park the right way; that sort of thing. A teacher.
I've read the book a few times, and sometimes I dislike and sometimes I love the book, so I guess it's just one of those kinds of books!
I call them mutable. Or noisy! (Oh, now I'm just fooling around, pay me no mind!) Right now I'm in a loving the book phase. But a friend reminds me that Holden seemed to whine through-out the book... so it's all in the mood, I guess.

I think Holden grew up to be a teacher at the same
school that he was expelled from, because even though
he came from an affluent background, he finally realized
the value of following through on a good education.

Actually, it's possible he never got the chance. In the uncollected Salinger story "This Sandwich Has No Mayonnaise," his brother Vincent has just found out that Holden has been listed as MIA. So he might've died in WWII.

since he was so much nicer to kids, i would say a job pertaining to children. like teaching or pediatrics. i dont know how he'd act toward the parents though. i thought the book was ok, but holden irritated me throughout the book.

I love the book but that's just me. I'm a writer myself and dont appreciate being bothered. I like to be alone.
I dont think he'd have a job other than as a writer. He's a little inappropriate, if you know what I mean and he hates the world. I think he'd live like a hermit.

Does anyone realize that is the book that "inspired" Mark David Chapman to kill John Lennon?
