Biology questions:

Algebra question:
Eighty pounds of 20% copper alloy are to be produced by melting down a bar of 12% alloy with another bar of 32% alloy. How much of each alloy is used?

Hint: for best results, separate into biology and algebra and ask 2 questions.
Algebra:
let x be the weight of 12%, then 80-x = weight of 32%
so
20%(80) = 12%x + 32%(80-x)
.2(80) = .12x + .32(80-x)
16 = .12x +25.6 - .32x
16 = -.2x + 25.6
.2x = 9.6
x = 48
80 - x = 32

Typically, biology is only offered at grade 11 or higher, and many schools will require student to have completed grade 10 prior to taking grade 11 courses. Algebra is very useful in both biology and chemistry because there are simple calculations that need to be done using one or two variables. Strong math skills also provide a foundation for all science courses because of the logic and reasoning skills that go along with it.
