Radon gas?

It is said to be harbored in hard rocks such as granite. Is there any danger in granite counter tops inside a home? I'm pretty sure the answer is no, but it seemed worth asking.

There is probably not enough material in your counter tops to cause a radon problem in your house. Problems occur when the ground that the house is built on contains radium/uranium or the building material such as in a brick or stone house contain radium. Not all granite will produce a radon problem. I wouldn't worry about it but the only way to be sure is to have your home tested. Winter is the worst time for radon build up due to keeping the windows and doors closed and the house being somewhat air tight. That would also make it the right time for testing. I don't know what the other person was trying to say about using granite tops for a chopping block. Doesn't have anything to do with your radon question.

You have nothing to worry about. The granite in your counter top comes from a quarry and they don't have quarries in Radon affected areas. Also radon accumulates in areas with little or no air movement like basements
