1989 S10 will not start after just driven, idles rough and gives a little black smoke after that, what is it?

I have a Chevy S10 (2.8L V6) that starts fine cold. After it warms up, if you shut it off and try to start it again, it takes about 5 minutes of turning it over and stomping the gas pedal. After that it seems to be struggling for about 3 minutes while idling (rough idling). anyone know what this is?

i have an 85 S-10, i dont think the 89 is full enjected. Nevertheless you need to get some carb cleaner and fuel line cleaner for your gas. do this a few times and you will notice a difference with a lot less black smoking. As far as its idleing rough, stop trying to prime the engine after you have already got it started. one pump on the gas is enough as long as the fuel nozzle isnt all gunked up. if you keep pumping out of anger you will flood it. been there and done that too many times. Try the STP fuel line and Carb/injector cleaner. Do this for every other tank of gas. they cost about 2 dollars a bottle. But with these older trucks sometimes you have to baby them.

The black smoke indicates the engine's getting flooded with gas due to a fuel pressure regulator, injector or related fuel delivery problem. This is not good for your catalytic converter ($$), so you need to fix the problem soon. If you hold the accelerator pedal all the way to the floor, it will tell your computer to enter the "clear flood" mode in which no more fuel is injected into the engine and your throttle plate is wide open which allows as much fresh air as possible into the engine. Don't crank for longer than 8 seconds or so at a time to give your starter motor a breather. Do a fuel pressure test to see how fast the fuel pressure is leaking off after the engine is shut down. It should hold pressure. You could have a leaking fuel injector or engine coolant temperature sensor (ECT) problem.

If you have made sure your spark plugs, distributor cap, and all wires are in good condition. Then the next thing i would do is replace the TPS sensor(throttle position sensor). Also your in line fuel filter could be plugged. If that isn't it then it also could be your fuel pump. The best thing to do is take it to a shop and put it on the machine that gives you a read out of exactly what is wrong. I owned a 1983 z28 Camaro with fuel injection. I don't know if that helps but those are some of the things I replaced in my camaro. Good luck

It sounds like the engine is getting too much gas. The 'cold start' sensor or the O2 sensor are probably malfunctioning.

Plenty of fuel helps a cold engine start but once warmed up it needs the proper air/fuel mixture to idle and run smoothly.

    hope this helps.

The fuel filter or fuel pump may be going bad, chek plugs wires, air filter give it a coplete tune up.It could also be the caytalitic converter going bad.
