Who is Merry Poppins?

Mary Poppins is a series of children's books written by P. L. Travers and originally illustrated by Mary Shepard. The books were first published in 1934, I think. She was an English nanny, who came to the Banks household.

Her story was also made into a movie by Disney, and has been a Broadway musical. The movie and musical make her a much sweeter person than the character as written in the books....
