I don't know what you mean by wood heart, but for the fishing rod you go to the northwestern sea. Its on the island that is in the top right corner. Go to the hut, then talk to the guy in it. Go outside and kill all the monsters outside. Wander around the edge of the water and if you have killed every monster you should see a "mermaid" in the water. Stun her with your boomerang, then go up to her and talk. Then go back to the guy in the hut, talk to him, go talk to lineback, and then go back to the guy in the hut. You should have a fishing rod now.

The fishing rod is I believe something Colin or whoever makes for you in your hometown. I believe you get it near the very beginning. Sorry, never heard of this wood heart thing.
