do you think that good managers are born and as such management skills cannot be acquired?

what makes a good manager according to you?

    Managers manage things and not people...leaders lead people. With that said, a manager must have the personality and mental aptitude to deal with situations that will occur at work and in life. People can learn the necessary skills to manage things, but leaders draw from what they learn growing up and the influences that have make them who they are. If your parent said that you will be nothing in life, chances are that is what will happen. If your parent encourage you to make mistakes and learn from them and tell you that you are the best, chances are your will grow up with a different attititude than the former child.

    Good managers are ones that can get the job done. It's the leader who make managers and workers want to work to get the job done.

    Most important, if you like what you see in the mirror you can change!

    I do think with proper support and a willingness to learn a good leader / manager can be developed.

    Skills I expect in a good leader:

    truthfullness - be able to coach individual performance to the best capacity, that includes privately telling people what expectations they are not meeting, where they are exceeding, where they fall in the group insofar as perofrmance goes. And support their ongoing improvement and development. This can be developed.

    clear direction - be able to speak plainly and honestly about the status of the teams perofrmance and expectations... this is something that can be developed.

    vision - be able ot recognize potential in people, in teams in the opportunities of the group they are leading. and communicate that opportunity.

    accountability & strong work ethic - be willing to pitch in and do the same or similar of what you ask your team. Not totally necessary, but your team needs to feel the leader is doing as much or more than they are. A work ethic is not necessarily that easy to develop in someone.

    The attitude is innate, the skills are learned and improved with practice. A good manager is not just people skills, but business skills and relevant decision making to improve the business. I wish I was born with this, instead I needed undergrad and grad school and practical experience.

    You can be born with management and leadership skills. You can also acquire them in the right surroundings. A good manager must be able to multitask, be able to put yourself in the shoes of those you manage, and be able to see things from many different angles. You must also have interpersonal communication skills.

    YES !

    A good manager is firm but fair and a great communicator with a can do attitude !

    These skills are very very hard to learn !

    A good manager cares more about his people than his job.

    He says, "We made a mistake".

    He doesn't say who did it.

    He accepts the problem.

    A good manager tells his boss when someone does a great job!

    He doesn't ntake credit for what his people do.

    some people just have a good ability to be management (how they were raised, thir natural attitude, etc.).

    but you can teach someone to be a good manager.

    that old saying: you can't teach an old dog new tricks.

    its just like a bad kid. a bad kid just needs some one to teach him to be a good kid and love him.

    anyone can be taught to do anything, but they HAVE TO WANT TO DO IT.
