Author of a children's book, I believe the title of the book is Susanna,?

How long ago did you read it, and do you remember any specific plot points? I found one of those diary books from 2001 called "Seeds of hope : the gold rush diary of Susanna Fairchild, California Territory, 1849" but I doubt you were in elementary school when it was published. I'll be back to see if you add any details.

EDIT: Could it be "Carolina's Courage" by Elizabeth Yates? I know the name is wrong, but memory is tricky sometimes.
