Central Ks is about as good as it gets to live. Honestly it all depends on what you want. things are slower here, not to say we are slow in the head, but we are not in a hurry all of the time. When people think of central Ks they think of miles of nothing with a few poor towns in between. Honestly I like it that way. At least we can walk out our front door and see most of the stars at night (fewer city lights and little pollution to contend with). Also if you don't mind a little drive the cities are not that far away. I live near Salina, it's a little over an hour to Wichita, and 2 hours to KC.
Weather: ISpring and Fall are absolutly perfect here. Winter and Summer are another story. It can be below zero in the winter, with God awful wind chill, and it can be 115+ in the summer with terrible Humidity. But the upside is that we can have some beautiful snowfalls/ice storms(not fun), and incredible thunderstorms in the summer. Yes the occasional tornado does show up, but rarely does a lot of damage. Rarely do the big ones hit, but when they do.. . . (Hesston: 1989, Greensburg: 2007).
Politically we're mostly Conservative. The Liberal area's are concentrated in the larger cities.
Schools, we may not get as much attention as the cities, but we have many good schools in the central part of the state. For being small towns, we try to have low student to teacher ratios. Also many districts are providing laptop computers for the students. And much of the population is educated, though some more than others. Anymore you almost need a degree to run a farm effeciently.
Jobs: There are many opprotunities to make a living here. From the obvious, farming, to Manufacturing, Healthcare, Construction, & Trucking. There are many nationally known companies located here. Tony's Pizza, is headquartered in Salina, as is Great Plains Mfg. (AG implements). Also located in Salina is an Exide Battery plant, and Phillips Lighting has a facility also. Salina, Junction City, and Manhattan also have modern regional healthcare facilities.
Recreation: There are many lakes and resevoirs within a short drive of here. Most offer boating, fishing, horseback riding, hiking & hunting. Several have off-road vehicle areas. And all are incredibly scenic in their own way. Wilson lake is gorgeous, it's small, but the landscape is beautiful.
What it comes down to is that you either like it or you don't. If a person really enjoys the lights, action, and sounds of a city, this is not the place for them. But if you like a place that's quiet, laid back, and where civilization is only a short drive away, you just might make it here

Not an easy answer. I am not sure if you are talking central Kansas or Kansas City... two different animals.
If Central Kansas, I guess will be pretty boring for most people unless you are used to small towns or grew up in a farm.
Kansas City has some nice things but it will really depend on what you are used to and what you like.
People are friendly, streets are clean, crime is low, things WORK, commute is short, ample parking spacing, etc.
It may be a little boring too, as there are no major attractions nearby, 10 hours to Colorado, no ocean, etc.. Some small hills and man made lakes but very important, housing is affordable and you can get nice houses for a fraction of what you would pay somewhere else.
So, considering all the facts, not a bad place to live especially for young families with children. Overland Park was ranked high as one of the best places for women in the US and average income is high.
Not a most exciting place to live, but if excitement is not your main thing, not bad at all.

If the central part of the state, which cities?
Really is a diverse difference

Ive lived here all my life. I have never seen a tornado.I love it here but know no different. It's good size. There are a lot of large suburbs. Like Lees Summit, Overland Park, Olathe. Plenty of places to eats and lots of malls. I live in Prairie Village Kansas which is a suburb of KC Mo.
A down fall is poor public transportation.
You get to experience all the 4 seasons. It can get as hot as 98 degrees and as cold as 3 degrees.
