I am unable to walk away and leave my pet Cockatiel alone for even a few minutes.?

He's generally happy and healthy, but we cant leave the room without taking him with us,because he'll follow! How can I humanely convince him to be a bit more Independent? He's about 8 months old and we hand-fed and tamed him.

Update:

He is part of a flock, but seems mostly disinterested because its a lovebird, and two keets hes with. What the problem is is that you cant even put him in his cage when your napping.I am pleased to death he loves me,but I feel he needs to learn a bit of independence.HELP!I need to go to the bathroom in privacy!LOL!

It's called discipline! Get a play pen and start training the bird to stay on the play pen with food. I tend to like to use cheerios as treats and they work well. Because he's still young you won't have a problem training him to stay with the rest of the other birds either. But it will take some time and patience to do this.

Place him on the play pen and walk away. If he tries to fly towards you, place him back on the play pen and place treats with him, and tell him to stay. If he tries to do it again, place him back inside his cage, for 15 mins and try it again. This teaches him he will lose his freedom if he don't stay where he is put. He'll learn sooner or later that he must stay where he's put.

    Good Luck!

If he is your only bird he is all you know, you are his flock member and he wants and needs you. If you have other tiels put one in a cage next to his and let them play out of the cage together. He will still want you but will be ok will the other tiel to hang out with. I have a birdroom so I close the door and let mine hang out with his brother and a friend. Does he have toys? How about a boing? They love to fly to a boing and jump on it. http://www.birdsupplies.com/Birdie-Boings-p/jptwis... , here is what one is. I also put a bowl of water out for him to bath in and that keeps him some what busy but every time he sees me he wants me. Be happy he loves you.
