It's true that "pit bulls" (i.e. American Pit Bull Terriers, American Staffordshire Terriers, and Staffordshire Bull Terriers) can trace their genetic lineage back to the bulldog. Bulldogs were crossed with terriers to create the "pit bull" breeds ("pit bull" is not, in itself, a breed; rather, it is a term used to collectively describe the breeds listed above). After years of selective breeding, however, all of the dogs that orginated with bulldogs, all the "pit bulls" included, now have a unique set of traits and characteritics that are standard of that breed. Pit Bulls (capitalized, that term refers to the American Pit Bull Terrier) are a recognized breed, with their own special traits and characteristics. So are American Bulldogs. Therefore, the most accurate description of your dog would be an American Pit Bull Terrier/American Bulldog mix. Be careful when just referring to your dog as a "pit bull"; it really isn't accurate. I sometimes refer to my dog (Staffordshire Bull Terrier/American Bulldog mix) just as a "bully breed". It's simple and accurate. But to really educate people, I would say the full and accurate breed name of your dog when asked.

Pit Bull is a term referring to American Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terriers, Staffordshire Bull Terrier and Irish Staffordshire Terriers.

Other people lump breeds like Boxer, American Bulldog, Bull Terrier into the group which promotes BSL and considers them all "dangerous Pit Bulls"

You should call your dogs what they are crosses. Pit Bulls are from mixed breeding of Bulldogs and Terriers but are their own distinct breed. So breeding outside to another similar breed is still a cross. The same if you breed a bulldog to a bullmastiff. Bullmastiff comes from bulldog and mastiff but they are their own breed and breeding them to a bulldog now wouldn't still be considered a Bullmastiff. You'd take away the traits that makes them a recognized breed. Most breeds are from crosses or mixed breeding but are recognized because they have a set type.

If people ask just say they are Pit Bull & Bulldog. Or that they are bulldog mixes. Whatever you want just be honest. As they are not purebred Pit Bulls of any of the 4 types out there.

Pit bull is actually a very lose term as there are several breeds that fall under it. Though in most case when someone says Pit bull; they are often referring to the American Pit Bull Terrier. Other breeds that fall in the Pit Bull Category are, American Staffordshire Terrier, Staffordshire bull terrier, bull terrier, Canary dog and a few others.

I would not call them mixes if you have a purebred dog. Of course if you look at it all the purebreds we have today came about by mixing dogs so really all dogs could be considered mutts.

Well you can either call it a pit bull since both are concidred pit bulls by most or you can call it a mut or pit am bulldog mix.

Maybe maybe not.... And neccessarily the Pit Bull is not exactlly a bull dog, but just it's own special breed! About the whole cross breed thing I'm not exactly sure what you'd call it.... that makes me want to think....: )
