Most popular Judo throws?

I am new to the sport and was wondering what the concensus was regarding the overall most popular/commonly used throws were. I guess I would like to know the top 5-7.

Thanks!

    Bless some of your hearts...

The most used (as in competetively) would be (in order of popularity) Uchi Mata, O Soto Gari, Seionage (various versions of it, mostly drop knee Seio), and Harai Goshi, with Tai Otoshi and maybe Kata Guruma (lately) probably squeeking in there. This changes a little from year to year but these are the generally most popular, win the most Ippons and are the most commonly used competetively speaking.

Everyone has their own unique throws, that might not necessarily be a popular throw, and more than likely the ones you are most successful at will probably be a way of throwing that throw that people are not used to, everyone sort of develops their own style and what works for them, as well as what allows them to catch people off guard.

Just to clarify off one of the above posters:

You won't really see O'goshi, or any form of it that much competetively. It is a very basic throw, which is useful in helping you understand how to do hip throws. However it is very rarely used effectively in Judo.

Also as far as trips go, ankle picks are more commonly used as far as an actual trip, the other techniques you mentioned is usually used as a set up. But is hardly common as a true throw, but more of a set up technique.

Also sacrifices are RARELY used tournament wise (unless you are fighting in the old man division) mainly because they are very risky, and if you miss it, you are on your back, or possible have cost yourself a point. But that is a good list of techniques, glad to hear you have found Judo and enjoy it, it is an awesome sport, and a great art.

Hope that is of some help.

The most common standing judo throws are Ippon Seoi Nage, Morote Seoi Nage, Ogoshi, Tai Otoshi, and Uchimata. The most common trips are O Soto Gari, O Uchi Gari, Ko Uchi Gari, and Sesai Suri Comi Ashi. And finally the most common sacrifice throws are Sumi Gaeish, and Tomoe Nage. I apologize if any of these are spelled incorrectly. I am only a yellow belt myself and have not quite mastered the whole spelling Japanese words thing.

Yeah I agree with judomofo. Ogoshi is kind of hard to do (for me at least, my instructor hated it when he first started too), and easy to check. And in competitive Judo, I doubt an opponent is going to give you enough of his forward balance to do a sacrifice throw.

From what I've seen, the most common throws are the easiest or quickest ones, or that have the largest margin for error and can still be completed. I've seen Osoto Garis that were basically a foot behind the angle and a push/tackle. It doesn't take a whole lot to do Ippon Seio Nage either. But, obviously, you have to take what the opponent gives you.

I love Seoi Nage and Tomo nage.

Best throws depends on your body type and what throws work well with you.
