Audio Recorders - Journalism?

I'm a journalism student looking for an audio recorder, but I want to purchase one that can be used to cover speeches as well as personal interviews.

Does anyone know of an affordable audio recorder that would suite both needs? I'm terrified of spending $100 or more only to find out that recordings of large speeches are inaudible.

Recorders using micro cassettes are now being superseded by the little USB style devices.

These are now seen everywhere for 'close up' work.

Most of these work surprising well for 'more distant' sound - some allow external mics - which can be 'directional' to be plugged in.

I can't be more specific, sorry.
