Would you be likely to hire a person who is over 55 yrs old and could still work for 10 years?

This is a Canadian question and I would be interested in hearing from people who are employed in Canada. The reason I am asking this is there seems to be a lot of predjudice against hiring older people in general as the attitude seems to be that they cannot do as well, or are not as fast as younger people, or they don't fit in an office environment, or they are too set in their ways. Do you really think people are this predjudiced? Do you think that employment agencies give more opportunities to younger than older people? I am interested in your personal opinions on the matter because jobs have gone hi-tech over the last 20 years and I was just wondering how other people feel about hiring policies.

I'm a new immigrant to Canada, in my 40s and with obviously gray hair. As long as I have the skills required by the job, I haven't had any problems. (but then I do live in Toronto - which helps).

If you want to work in an office, make sure your computer skills are up-to-date, and you are familiar with the major software being used.

I think a lot of problems employers have, is that they think older people don't know how to use computers and new technology. They forget that computers have been around for 25 years, and I have been using one regularly for over 20 years now.

In some ways I think employers do have a right to be concerned, but if older people make the time to learn, and can show the employer that they are familiar with the technology, they should be fine.

Well I am not from Canada.......but my grandmother is 78 and still working. She can do more work than some of the younger ones. I think that in some cases they are more dependable. =)
