The Onion Personals?

Anyone tried the dating site the Onion Personals--associated with theonion.com web site? It's not free, so wanted anyone's advice on that site before I paid for service.

Any other dating sites that are free you might suggest? never done internet dating before!

Springstreet Personals was/still is, I believe, the name of the dating network they are with. It's the same as with salon.com, villagevoice.com, and others.

Back in 2002/2003 it was worth the price. Since then, it's been so crippled as to be worthless. You can't perform any worthwhile search functions without being a paying member, and this is a major deterrent to anyone who wants to browse around before joining. So nobody bothers to create profiles, nobody pays, nobody messages, and nobody signs back on because everything is stagnant. Look around and you'll see nothing but users who haven't logged in for over 3 months. I don't even think you can actually read the profile details without signing up, or at least it was like that for a while.

I literally *still* have unused credits from 2003 when the site started to become worthless. A class action lawsuit settlement a couple of years ago provided me (and all others who subscribed during the timeframe I did) with some freebies that I've never bothered using either, since nobody logs in to even check their messages or anything. It's basically dead.

Try a free site like okcupid before spending your money on this one. Even match.com can be worth the money, although make sure you don't get stuck in their recurring billing cycle because they DO NOT GIVE REFUNDS, even if you cancel five seconds after they rebill you for another 6 months.

    The Onion Personals

Even though I have not tried the Onion Personals, one thing I am not so keen on is that they will show the profile of their members for the entire Onion-reading public to see. I think the benefit of other online dating sites - like OkCupid, Match, Nerve, etc - is that at least they keep some discretion to it (there are some who relish that and others who really couldn't give a toss).

That said, if you have no bones about having your profile exposed to an audience looking more for humorous stories than they are romantic companionship, then by all means proceed.

  • There are some good pay sites out there, but I rarely pay either. But if you like the site and you feel it is worth a few buck, that help keep the site running... If no one is supporting the sites with funds, they will eventually go away and that's no good either. I personally Like OKC; I own a couple date sites and hopefully mine will be as good as OKC, but mine will incorporate astrology also. Right now, my sites are free, but someday I know I will be forced to charge unless I get some really good paying advertisers. So again; if you like the site and would like to see them stick around, help fund them if you can. I am looking into this Onion Personals myself; I herd about it through an audio book I bought called, "The Geeks Guide to Dating". It's a good book; even if your not a Geek, it is a must read/listen.

I did go to the onion personal sub-domain site and got redirected to some Adult FriendFinder site, so I would say that I wont be joining that one. Thank you so much, CainO'

I always read the ONION online. I see the profile in the corner too and they do seem like attractive like minded people, but I don't think it would differ from most online dating sites. Give it a shot, whats the worst that could happen?

Better to do local personal ads and meet in person with a local, than waste time chatting with someone far away that you may never meet. The farther away, the more likely they can post fake pic, fake age, other fake info and lie, lie , lie. Yes others can lie too, but it is harder to lie in person than on the net.
