i think what you mean is 擲聖筊 (ZHI SHENG JIAO). this is can be widely seen in chinese praying rituals, to god or to the dead people.

擲 = throw

聖 = holy

筊 = a kind of bamboo device used in divination

this bamboo (or wooden) device is actually a pair of crescent shape block, one side rounded and the other side flat.

when the prayer has a question to ask the god or the dead people, the person will ask the question in his heart, then throw the two blocks on the floor. if both rounded side face up, meaning the answer is negative, if both rounded side face down, means "no answer at the moment", the prayer may ask again. if one of the block face up and the other face down, the answer is positive.

Eh, I do not see how this woul be a main issue for them greater than something else is. If our courting approaches for matters billions of years historic are idea to be unsuitable via them, I see no rationale they could agree on our courting approaches for a couple of thousand years in the past... They threw out all of that technological know-how.
