When I start my laptop, it says there's no OS found.?

What's wrong and how do I fix it?

This computer is not hooked up to the internet and has not had anything uploaded from another computer. Also, nothing new has been uploaded, even from a program disk, for at least six months.

Update:

Let me be clear...is there a solution that DOESN'T involve losing all of my programs and data?

Update 2:

Michutda--will that save my programs and data? Or will it be overwritten?

Update 3:

Thanks for the tip, but Geek Squad was no help. They looked at it for two seconds, then said it would be about $450 for repairs and no way to retrieve my data and I should just buy a new computer...I'm not buying it....

Before you go through the trouble of having your operating system reinstalled and losing all your data you should have the hard drive tested. As a computer tech i have seen this type of error because of a failed hard drive. Some computers have a built in utility to test your hard drive.....however if you are a novice user this is probably beyond what you can do.

Your best bet is to take it to a place like Geek Squad at Best Buy and check it in for a diagnosis. There they will test your hard drive as well as the rest of your hardware. Furthermore they should be able to back up any data that might be important to you. Good luck.

Two reasons this can happen. Either your hard drive went bad, or your config.ini file is corrupt. Here is how to fix...

Take the original operating system and place in the cd drive. When you power up press F12 to go to the boot menu, and boot from cd. There is an option to repair the drive at that point.

you need to reinstall you r OS if it was pre-installed contact the company who sold you the laptop if it was a friend or some one like that you will either need to buy a new OS disk or download it from the net
