What does the letter "P" stand for on a headstone?

I was exploring the local cemetery a few weeks ago, and I noticed more than one headstone with a small letter "P" by itself in the lower right corner of the stone. What does this mean? The stones with the p's weren't particularly old, all mid to late 20th century.

This is probably an indication of Perpetual Care.

The early maker's marks were put by artists & then by the stonecutters yards that produced each stone by hand.

Large garden cemeteries that began in the 1800s had two packages: you keep up your own family plot, or you pay more for perpetual care. They marked the plot surrounds or the graves to indicate whether their crew should tend it.

Most of them have abandoned that now, the families who opted to do it themselves or not are long gone & the cemetery association manages the whole place.

This is why the modern graveyards insist that everything is done for the convenience of their lawn crew.

That settled, start looking for maker's marks & learn about the earlier stones!

My guess would be Protestant. Did you see any there that had a C?
