Is the NRL (National Rugby League) in Australia the top rugby league there?

Or is there a more prestigious league there? I'm an American that loves rugby but am still learning about some things. Help me out! :)

The NRL is as good as it gets when it comes to rugby league in Australia, and for that matter the world.

NRL is first grade (and comprises 15 teams from Australia and 1 from New Zealand), there is a new under 21s league and Premier League (2nd grade) a step down (but they aren't important, you don't need to know about them!). And there is the English SuperLeague in England (where the players get more money, but they aren't as good).

(and can I make a really trivial point?! When you just refer to 'rugby' most people will assume you are talking about rugby union)

And if you are looking for a team to support I suggest Manly!

    I hope that helps!

Pineapple has the best answer so far, and she mentions about ruby union.

There are two types of ruby, a rugby union, and a rugby league.

When you talk about Rugby, you may be referring to rugby union. Even though you are saying league, you still may be referring to rugby union.

How can you tell? Hmm, rugby union has 15 players per side, and rugby league only has 13 players per side.

The NRL is the top for rugby league, this would be similar to your NFL.

If you mean rugby union, the top would be the Super 14s. This is played between teams from South Africa, New Zealand and Australia. Australia has 4 teams, which are: New South Wales, Queensland, the A.C.T., and Western Australia.

Around 20 years ago the comp went national, before then you just had separate comps in each states capital city. Now it is a national comp including a team from new zealand who are very strong in football. The ultimate football is played in what is called state of origin and is NSW vs QLD (no kiwis or other states) and is only 3 games around June. You MUST tune in to it next year and when you see it you will understand why.

Other than that the NRL is a very strong comp which is why Australia do so well internationally because our players grow up in the toughest and most skillful comp.
